The second aspect of salvation, deliverance from the power and influence of sin in a
believer's life, is contrasted with the primary aspect of salvation, deliverance from
the penalty of sin, in just about every respect. Notice the following points of
contrast.

1. The first is offered by means of the death of Christ, whereas the second is offered
by means of the life of Christ;

2. The first is offered as the result of Christ coming into the world the first time,
whereas the second is offered as the result of His leaving this world and returning to
heaven;

3. The first is offered alien sinners, whereas the second is offered the children of
God;

4. The first is in order to make children of God, whereas the second is in order that
the children of God serve God acceptably;

5. The first is received through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, apart from all human
merit, whereas the second is conditioned on the children of God walking in the truth;

6. The first is deliverance from the penalty of sin, which is death, whereas the
second is deliverance from the power and influence of sin in the life of the believer
in Christ;

7. The first is a deliverance which is an accomplished fact, never to be repeated,
whereas the second is progressive, and involves the lifetime responsibility of the
saved.

Other points of contrast could be given, but these suffice to show that when we speak
of the primary and secondary aspects of deliverance we are not talking about the same
work of Christ, nor the same people to whom it is offered, nor the same means of
receiving the benefit of it, nor the same design of God in what is received.

Before we continue with this subject, allow me to give a simple rule for as a
guideline: When salvation, in the New Testament, is predicated of conditions beyond
believing in Christ, it always refers to the secondary aspect of salvation. This, if
true, categorizes many passages like Romans 10:13, "For whosoever shall call upon the
name of the Lord shall be saved," which Baptists and others apply to alien sinners,
and Mark 16:16, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved," which the Church
of Christ, Lutherans, Catholics, Mormons, etc. apply to alien sinners. Instead, these
texts and others are second aspect texts. As such, these texts involve what God offers
His children and has no application toward alien sinners.

Understanding this aspect of salvation will help Bible students make the proper
application of scripture, especially to the alien sinner. It will also provide a
better understanding of the more difficult verses of scripture. It will enable you to
know what God offers you, His child, so that you can be victorious in your life, and
what you must do to benefit from it. It will also give the church the proper place of
importance in God's design for His children. BD
