A study of such words as ". . . . eternal life . . . . redemption . . . . quicken . .
. . raise up . . . . and salvation" will reveal they are used in a two-fold sense, as
an accomplished fact, a present possession, and as something reserved for the future,
yet to be possessed.
Looking at each one individually, notice this two-fold application as discovered in
the Scriptures. First, eternal life, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that
believeth on me hath everlasting life" (Jn 6:47). Next, consider Mark 10:30, "But he
shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and
mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world (or age) to come
eternal life."
The word "quicken" means to make alive. In Ephesians 2:1, the passage reveals, "And
you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins." Then, Romans 8:11 says,
"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that
raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit
that dwelleth in you."
Note the parallel application pertaining to the term "salvation." "For by grace are ye
saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God" (Eph 2:8). In
Romans 13:11, "And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of
sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed."
Continuing, consider the term "raised up." "Even when we were dead in sins, hath
quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up
together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Eph 2:5, 6).
From John 6:54, comes the instruction, "Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood,
hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."
Finally, is the term "redemption." "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" (Eph 1:7). "And not only
they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves
groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body"
(Rm 8:23).
Of these two truths, as illustrated with the previous verse comparisons, one truth is
revealed as an accomplished fact, a present possession. The other truth shows
something reserved for the future, yet to be possessed. The pairing of these two
truths encompasses both the primary and final, first and third, aspects of
deliverance. BD
