Our last lesson dealt with the co-equal deity of the Father and the Son. This lesson
examines the co-equal deity of the Holy Spirit with the Father and the Son. This
lessons centers on the texts establishing the deity of the Spirit.
I. First, note those associations of the Holy Spirit with the other two persons of the
Godhead:
A. Go again to the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3:16 (Lk 3:21-22). Simply observe here
the descending Spirit is distinct from the baptized Jesus and the approving Father.
B. Next, go to the commission to the church in Matthew 28:19 where the baptismal
formula is given and note the position of equality maintained by the Holy Spirit's
name.
II. Throughout the Word of God personal characteristics equaling those possessed by
the Father and the Son are attributed likewise to the blessed Spirit:
A. First, we know he possesses intelligence:
1. Romans 8:27 references the "mind of the Spirit."
2. I Corinthians 2:10-11 reveals the infinite comprehension of the Spirit. "But God
hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit; for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea,
the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of
man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."
B. Second, He has a will. I Corinthians 12:11, "But all these worketh that one and the
self-same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."
C. Third, note He exhibits love. Romans 15:30, "Now I beseech you, brethren, for the
Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with
me in your prayers to God for me."
III. Through the Scriptures, additional attributes are claimed for the Holy Spirit, as
well as a listing of His other activities:
A. He possesses power (Rm 15:13). " . . . . that ye may abound in hope, through the
power of the Holy Spirit."
B. His creative work is described in Job 33:4. "The Spirit of God hath made me."
Compare also with Psalms 33:6 and remember that "breath" and "Spirit" translate the
same word in both Hebrew and in Greek.
C. He produces the new birth according to John 3:5-8.
D. He both commands and forbids, as is evidenced in the following verses, Acts 8:29;
Acts 11:12; and Acts 16:6-7.
E. It was one of the functions of the Holy Spirit to "set men over the church" (Acts
20:28).
F. Along this same line of thought, note He both "calls" men into the ministry, here
and abroad, and sends them forth, as to the laying of the specific field upon their
hearts (Acts 13:1-4). He then "sends them forth," and also requires the church to free
them fully to relieve and release them, and so send them out!"
G. He miraculously inspired the men who penned the sacred Scriptures. Note in order
the following verses II Peter 1:21; John 14:26; and John 16:13.
H. The Holy Spirit also has performed miracles as in Acts 8:39 when He suddenly
transported Philip away from the baptism of the Eunuch.
I. In the work of the eternal security of the believer in Christ, the Holy Spirit is
both the Seal and the Sealer (Eph 1:13-14; Eph 4:30).
J. Not the least important role of the Spirit is that of interceding for us in prayer
(Rm 8:26).
K. Then too, as revealed in the inspired Word of Truth as given to inspired and
miraculously empowered men (II Tim 2:7), He comforts (I Thess 4:18) and teaches us (I
Cor 2:13). We know He primarily teaches us as we "compare Scripture with Scripture."
IV. His personality of equality with the Father and Son is proven also by the fact
that:
A. He may be vexed and grieved (Isa 63:10; Eph 4:30; Acts 5:1-3).
B. He convicts and invites the lost to Christ as the Word is preached according to
John 16:8-9 and Revelations 22:17.
V. In conclusion, note that He is:
A. Eternal (Heb 9:14).
B. Omni-present (Ps 134:7-8; Ps 139:7-10)
C. Omniscient (I Cor 2:10-11)
D. Omnipotent (Lk 1:35)
E. Given a variety of names and or titles:
1. The Spirit (I Cor 2:10)
2. The Holy Spirit (Lk 11:13)
3. The Eternal Spirit (Heb 9:14)
4. The Spirit of God (I Cor 3:16)
5. The Spirit of the Living God (II Cor 3:3)
6. The Spirit of Christ (Rm 8:9)
7. The Spirit of His Son (Gal 4:6)
8. The Spirit of Jesus (Acts 16:6-7)
9. The Spirit of Jesus Christ (Phil 1:19)
10. The Spirit of Burning (Isa 4:4)
11. The Holy Spirit of Promise (Eph 1:13)
12. The Spirit of Truth (Jn 15:26)
13. The Spirit of Life (Rm 8:2)
14. The Spirit of Grace (Heb 10:29)
15. The Spirit of Glory (I Pet 4:13-14)
16. The Comforter (Jn 14:26)
One thing He does not do, (this will be considered in more detail in a separate study
on "The Holy Spirit), He does not and has never baptized anyone! JM
